Youth Peace Walk Steps fro Peace - March 11th
Southampton Council of Faiths organised the 5th annual Youth
Peace Walk on Sunday 11th March. The walkers visiedt a
Gurdwara, Mosque, Church, Friends House (Quakers), Vedic
temple and a Synagogue as well as listened to talks about
Buddhist and Baha’i’ faiths. “The walkers always enjoy the
experience of visiting these places of worship but also the
opportunity to meet people from other faiths” said David
Vane, secretary of Southampton Council of Faiths and one of
the organisers of the walk. “We have people coming from
Winchester, Southampton and Solent Universities and we had
over 90 people" |

15th Annual Peace Walk |

Mayor Terry Matthews and Chair Hazel Inskip at the Peace
Foutain |
Don't rain on our parade! Torrential rain
did not discourage the 90 members from various faith
communities in the area from attending the 15th Annual Peace
Walk on Sunday 12th June. The forecast was not looking
good when the walkers met at the Queens Jubilee Peace
Fountain in Southampton, however the chair of Southampton
Council of Faiths, Hazel Inskip, welcomed the Mayor of
Southampton Cllr Terry Matthews who gave the group some
words of encouragement to send them on their way. They then
walked to Nanaksar Gurdwara where they were given lunch and
after two presentations about the Sikh and Baha'i faith the
group moved on to the Synagogue in Mordaunt Rd and then to
St Edmunds Church in the Avenue. The rain was still
falling heavily as they made their way to the Friends House,
Medina Mosque and finally the Vedic temple where they heard
about Buddhism and Hinduism. The walk has become very
popular said David Vane, the organiser of the walk but I
think the rain will have discouraged many people from
coming. However the rain did not discourage the people who
did attend including Caroline Nokes MP, Phil Gibson Head
of Student Services for Solent University and Cllr Roy Perry
who leads the Hampshire Interfaith movement. The hardy
managed to stay with the walk until the end and everyone
agreed that the rain had not stopped their enjoyment of the
event. The Peace Walk was started to promote peace and
understanding in the city and has become so popular that
there is now a youth peace walk in March each year. |

Fragments of another
life
When people flee their homes and homelands because of
persecution, they are often lucky to escape with their lives
- and precious little else.
In this exhibition,
photographer Rhonda Klevansky portrays 50 per recent
arrivals to the United Kingdom with few mementoes of their
previous lives that they did manage to salvage, and digital
artist Birgit Muller presents the situation asylum seekers
find themselves in while waiting for a Home Office decision. |
