March 2008- Who is God? Southampton
Interfaith Link welcomed a broad cross-section of guests to
the Abu Baker Mosque to explore this eternal question.
Not surprisingly, two hours was not quite enough to answer
it fully. Speakers from the Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian,
Jewish, Muslim and Sikh communities presented their personal
views to try to shed some light on the matter. Following a
vigorous Q&A session and round-table discussions it was the
similarities in the views of those present that was most
striking, and those looking for division among the faith
communities represented in the city would have been
disappointed.
Despite the misconceptions that we can gain of the different
religions, the theme of understanding our God or spiritual
life-force through the examples of the founders of the world
faiths was repeated by each contributor. Essentially we all
believe in the same values.
The meeting was an excellent illustration of Southampton
Interfaith Link’s motto “Speak with pride, listen with
respect”. The group is for anyone who is interested in
meeting with people from faiths other than their own.
The next public event is the Peace Walk on the 1st June
2008. This event is rapidly growing in popularity and is an
opportunity to visit many places of worship around
Southampton and to learn more about the faith of others.
Everyone is welcome

Aug 2006 - Southampton
Council of Faiths launch 'Faith in your City' initiative to
commemorate the fifth anniversary of September the 11th
disaster
|
| Members of the Southampton
Council of Faiths are organising an information pack based
on series of television programmes produced by Meridian in
2003. The six half hour programmes show how members of the
main faiths in the city of Southampton - Buddhists,
Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Jews and Sikhs, practice their
faith in their lives. The information pack will be sent to
all of the schools, places of worship, local organisations
involved in multifaith work and or course the faith
communities themselves. It is hoped that the pack will
encourage exploration of each other's faiths and customs to
enable a better understanding within the city faith
communities.
